Because We Only Have One Life
"You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for two things, the people you meet and the books you read." -It's so true what Charles Jones said. To be honest, I am not a bookaholic person even though I'm currently working in an educational environment. I am the kind of person who would just happen to read any book if the book happens to be there at any happenstance. However, when I start reading something, not even a rumbling thunder can wake me up. :)
One fine evening, I was looking for a reading material to kill my boredom during the invigilation session. I just grabbed one from my Reader's Digest collection, which was the March 2010 edition and rushed up into the exam hall. I spent the first 30 minutes glancing from page 1 to the back cover, while peeking at the candidates. As I am not a bookworm, I don't normally read every page of Reader's Digest - my favorite page has always been the one-page article like the All in a Day's Work, Word Power, Laugh, or even fillers and anecdotes.
Since I had another 90 minutes to spend in the exam hall, I just randomly select an article to read and I happened to stop on page 42, an article titled "The Diminutive Dr Death" by Chin Mui Yoon. It was an article about Dr. Porntip Rojanasunan a.k.a Dr. Death. Her commitment on the work of expanding the forensic science for justifying crime and investigation in Thailand was indeed overwhelming. But it was her personality and way of thinking that really amazed me at the moment. The article really showed another side of Dr. Death: she's not a person of dogma as how she present herself. She was indeed an ordinary married woman who loves CSI, dancing and latin musics. She's funny and witty: her joke as stated in the article: "I express my creative side through my dressing. And the dead do not complain about the way I look". lols!! (>.<) But it was the last paragraph of the article that really struck me into the heart. It was a quote from her: "If you have one life and you're not making something good with it, then what's the point?" Somehow her saying managed to put a spank on my face and got me into thinking. At age 28, other than being a mother and a lecturer in a small private college, there's nothing of me to be proud of. There 's a poignant lullaby ringing in my ears "Who are you? Where are you? Why are you here?". I am just too comfort at the place I am right now, so something's wrong here, something missing. The achievement towards my own goal of life - To be a somebody in this world, someone who can make my parents proud.
I believe that if you tend to be so comfortable at the same level at all time, you are in a great danger! You need to get out of the box, take a risk, find something new and upgrade yourself. For which reasons I am going to take a risk by leaving my loving career and face a new challenge in order to improve myself. I believe I can do it, because I've failed once, but not twice. I already know what does it takes to fall and what does it takes to win. Second strike is always stronger than the first!
Bunch of gratitude to Dr. Death, you've inspired me. Academia, here I come! :)
